1.6 million die in violence annually.

The Devastating Toll

For every victim, an entire network of people's lives are deeply injured and forever changed. These survivors, often isolated and disenfranchised because of the abnormality and horror of death by homicide and suicide, often suffer alone and in what I call "white noise - the silence that sings 'cause nobody got nothing to say."

A Public Health Crisis

When heartbreak is experienced among a society ill at ease talking about the unsettling realities of life, especially grief, where do we go for shelter? To what or whom can we turn for emotional oxygen?

Unfortunately, survivors of homicide and suicide loss are underserved populations. We are generally greeted with awkward pleasantries or kept at a distance, while our grief goes unacknowledged, unexpressed and unhealed.

I know this silence intimately. After losing my partner to homicide, I had to drive two hours weekly to find specialized support. This experience led me to write White Noise: The Underbelly of All That Lingers - Surviving Sudden Death Grief.

With a foreword by Dr. Linda Jordan, former Manager of the Duke University Unicorn Bereavement Center and leader of my original support group, this book weaves together both personal narrative and guided prompts designed to be an active supporter and holder of space for grief to emerge, and mourning to be affirmed.

The Freedom to Grieve

I am a witness that it can save a life to be able to freely express the grief and pain of our stories without judgment - stories that if kept inside, strangles life one unspoken word after another. For it is not the tragic losses alone that threaten our vitality. It is the subsequent silence and how successfully it influences us to believe we are alone, and without hope that anyone will ever be able to truly touch the pain that devastates inside.

Serving From The Front Lines

In this landscape of silence and isolation, organizations across our communities stand uniquely positioned to offer immediate support to survivors of homicide and suicide through the difficult days and months ahead. While this is especially crucial during the holiday season, survivors can benefit from resources that acknowledge their unique journey and provide guidance when formal support isn't available. White Noise serves as both companion and witness, available whenever survivors need it most.

Making An Impact

Whether you're a community organization, victim services unit, healthcare provider, funeral home, faith-based organization, or support group, there are meaningful ways to support survivors through their journey. One simple yet powerful step is providing them with resources developed specifically for their experience.

I designed White Noise to be a complete support system - no additional structure, staffing, or programming required. Many victim support organizations have integrated this resource by:

  • Providing it immediately after loss

  • Including it in victim support packages

  • Offering it during support services

  • Making it available as an immediate grief support resource

For organizations seeking to implement comprehensive support programs, I also offer training  in my evidence-based methodology for facilitating trauma-informed grief support groups. This approach integrates my 26 years of transformational counseling experience with specific insights into supporting survivors of traumatic loss.
